Hooked Mats

Hooked mats - an early form of recycling where everyone benefitted - worn clothing with still good sections of cloth was cut into small strips and pulled thru burlap (most probably grain or feed sacks turned to a new use) with a small metal hook to form colorful designs drawn by the maker and turned in to rugs.  As these became popular different companies began printing designs on burlap and marketing them.  Then a mechanised hook was created by the Bluenose company in Nova Scotia, more companies began marketing patterns and selections of yarns to go with them, and the rugs turned into an art form......a cherished form of individual expression still popular today.

On this page you can view the mats that are available.
